Today, expectant mothers are afforded the option to choose what type of birth they'd like to have. Associated with each type of birth are many risks and benefits, so be sure that you and your partner review all of the options and, together with your doctor, decide what works best for you and your baby. Consider some of the following birth options: the place of birth; a natural versus a medicated birth; and a vaginal birth, water birth or cesarean section.
Choosing a place to deliver your baby is a very important decision. The majority of women prefer to deliver their babies in hospitals because the medical staff is fully equipped to handle any emergencies. However, some women gravitate toward birthing centers or a home birth because midwives provide a more natural experience. If you opt for a birthing center or home birth, be sure to find a licensed midwife to guide you through your pregnancy.
Hospital births also give you the option of having a natural birth without medication or an epidural. Epidurals can relieve harsh labor pains, help you relax, focus on breathing, and prepare for the delivery.
Giving birth in a hospital also provides you with the choice of having a vaginal birth or a cesarean section. If you are having a cesarean section, birthing centers and a home birth are no longer an option for you as these facilities mainly cater to low-risk pregnancies and natural deliveries.
In case you have any pregnancy complications or opt for a scheduled cesarean, a hospital will be able to provide immediate medical attention. The downfall of hospital births: sometimes unwanted medical interventions are necessary to preserve the well-being of you and your baby. When considering these options, choose a route that will not jeopardize the health and safety of you or your baby.
