Pregnancy Symptoms: A Missed Menstrual Period
The most obvious sign that you are pregnant is
a missed menstrual period , although it may not be the first sign. You also might experience other common pregnancy symptoms such as
fatigue,
tender breasts, and
nausea. You may also experience a small amount of bleeding during the time you expect your menstrual period; this is known
implantation bleeding.
If you do not have a regular menstrual cycle, you might realize you've missed a period and other symptoms may be your first clue. Also note that a missed menstrual cycle is not the final verdict; you may miss a period as a result of several factors, including:
- Menopause
- Anorexia or bulimia
- Emotional stress
- Illegal drug use
- Certain diseases such as liver disease, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.
- Excessive weight loss or gain
If you do miss a period, take a home pregnancy test to help determine if you are pregnant. Although not 100% accurate, home pregnancy tests are a good first step. If your test results are positive, make an appointment with your doctor. He or she can confirm your pregnancy with a blood test and ultrasound.
