Pregnancy Symptoms: Increased Sensitivity to Smell
During pregnancy you may notice that you have an increased sensitivity to smell. Like many other pregnancy symptoms, doctors attribute your heightened sensitivity to the increased amount of hormones flowing through your body. Certain aromas and flavors might also cause nausea and vomiting.
Some scientists debate whether or not your heightened sense of smell has any benefits to your unborn baby. One theory suggests morning sickness and sensitivity to certain smells protect the baby from certain foods and toxins that are harmful.
Coping With Your Sensitivity to Smell
You should note how significantly your sensitivity to smell has changed and how this affects you. Because certain smells may aggravate morning sickness, consider some of the following tips to help you cope with sensitivity to smell:
- Avoid areas with strong aromas such as grocery stores or restaurants.
- Try using candles or potpourri to help cover scents that are unpleasant.
- Wash your clothes more than usual; fibers tend to hold onto odors.
- Keep your windows open while cooking.
During this stage of your pregnancy, try to surround yourself with scents you enjoy such as mint, lemon, or other herbs that might be therapeutic.
