Childproofing and Baby Equipment Safety Tips
Childproofing Your Home
The contents of each room in your home may require different
childproofing tactics.
- Kitchen: install safety latches on all cabinets and drawers so your baby cannot tamper with poisonous household products. While cooking, make sure to use the back burners and turn pot handles toward the back of the stove so they are out of reach.
- Bathrooms: you should also install safety latches on all cabinets and drawers in the bathroom to shield your baby from other poisonous cleaners or household products. Install a toilet lock to keep the lid closed; this will prevent children from falling into and drowning in the toilet. You should also install an anti-scalding device to your water heater that limits the maximum temperature of your tap water so there's no chance your baby's bath water will scald him or her. To prevent electrocution, unplug blow dryers and other equipment.
- Other Rooms: doorknob covers will keep your baby out of dangerous areas, like an outdoor swimming pool if he or she wanders out of sight. Corner and edge bumpers fitted on low tables will also minimize scratches and bruises while your baby is exploring. Make sure your house has working fire alarms and you have an escape plan in case of fire. Smoke detectors should be tested frequently and replaced every 10 years, emergency exits should be free of toys or furniture that would prevent a speedy escape, and children should be taught about the dangers of matches or lighters (when they are old enough). You can also purchase flame-resistant pajamas for your children.
If you have a poison emergency or question about poisons you can call, 1-800-222-1222. If your child has collapsed, has stopped breathing, or you have another emergency call, 9-1-1.
